Willliam James Youngman was born in Saxlingham Nethergate on 26 November 1893. His parents were Alice and William Youngman. His father was a rough carpenter.
He was baptised in St. Mary’s Church, Saxlingham Nethergate on 4 March 1894. He had a brother Herbert Henry born 8 February 1900 and another sibling who died before 1911.
In 1911 he was living with his parents on the Norwich Road, Saxlingham Nethergate. He was working as a bricklayer’s labourer.
During the First World War he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. His service records have not survived but his service number was 100798. He became an Acting Sergeant.
In November 1915 he was stationed at the hospital in Eastleigh, Hampshire.
On 15 November 1915 Eveline Victoria Binks of 69 Courtfield Gardens, Kensington applied for a special licence to marry William James Youngman. She stated that they were over the age of 21 years. ( 69 Courtfield Gardens is an elegant 20 roomed house, so she may have been working there as a parlour maid)
She was born in 1882 in Alphamstone to Sarah and Joseph Binks. She was baptised in St. Barnabas Church on 18th July 1882.
In 1911 she was working as a parlour maid in Bracondale Woods, Norwich. It is presumed that she met William whilst working there. It is known that William Aldis from Saxlingham Nethergate was working as a chauffeur at the above address when he enlisted in the army. He was probably a friend of William Youngman.
They were married on 21st November 1915 at St. Jude Church, Kensington. He was a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was stationed in Eastleigh. It was recorded that she was 28 years old and he was 24 years old. This was not correct as he was 22 years old and she was 32 years old. They probably married by special licence as he was about to be sent abroad.
Her sister Beatrice and her husband Harold Wells Angiers were witnesses of the marriage. Harold served in the Royal Airforce and died from influenza in 1918.
In 1919 William and Eveline were living at 53 Rendlesham Road, Stamford Bridge, Hackney.
They returned to live in Saxlingham Nethergate. On 26 April 1920 their son William Harold ( known as Ginger) was born in Saxlingham. A second son Frederick Lionel was born 22 March 1923.
They continued to live in Saxlingham until 1929. It is not known what work William did during this time.
In 1939 William and Eveline were living with Frederick at 16 Walker Street, Westgate, Wakefield. William was a prisoner officer working at Wakefield Prison. They lived in a tied house. All their neighbours worked at the prison. Their son Frederick was an apprentice painter and decorator. It is not known where William was in 1939 but he married Jesse Lumb from Wakefield and lived in Yorkshire for the rest of his life.
The family moved back to Norfolk and Eveline died in Yarmouth in 1944.
On 10th November 1945 William married Louie Harmer, born 11 September 1903 at Christ Church , Eaton, Norwich. She lived at 35 Lincoln Street Norwich. In 1939 she was working as a domestic servant at Runton Hall, Norfolk.
They lived at 10 Aldryche Road, Norwich .
William died 10 March 1957 at his home address. His death certificate recorded that he had died of a cardiac infarct coronary and artery sclerosis. The information was supplied by his son Frederick Lionel. Probate was granted to William Harold Youngman, welder and Frederick Lionel Youngman, prison officer.
William was buried in the cemetery of St. Mary’s Church, Saxlingham Nethtergate
